I don't where the winged things came from, but there seems to be a lot of them. They're tapping at the windows, occasionally peering inside with their black eyes, scratching at the doors, scraping against the walls, walking across the roof with their clawed feet.

Scarlet is staring at me like a spider might study an unusual looking fly that's been caught in its web, a mix of curiosity and appetite.
I nod, saying nothing. I know I've got blood all over me. I wonder if I look like a victim or a perpetrator.

"A church can do an exorcism or something?"
"Have you ever read The Exorcist or seen the movie?"
"No," Arica says.
"Well, two people die during the exorcism scene at the end," Emily says. "Besides, I liked the demon version of the little girl better than the regular one."

He's thinking this There's been a lot of turnover lately; we always have new faces and new voices. And these faces and these voices don't seem quite right.

She seems alarmed. The girl tries to sit up, shedding the jacket. Her blonde hair is stained red and matted to her face and scalp. Her eyes are still closed and caked with blood. She reaches out towards me, touching the zipper on my sweatshirt. She moves her hand upward until it reaches my face; she touches it like a blind person might.
"We can't be here," she says. "We have to go now."

El Spock demands an explanation. The miscreants do their best, resulting in pretty much what you'd expect from the two stoned CEOs of Frugs, Inc. at two in the morning. El Spock repeats one word of their rambling answer drugs. He says it in English first, then in espanol. Drogas.

There are several short stories in this book. the style and the remarkable flavor of the writing is a constant thoughout even though there are variations in what the author is writing about. my personal favorite from all of them is the winged things, a surreal and bleak apocalyptic tale with a really unusual ending. i read through all of these and now i find it hard to choose, the insomniacs might be a close second. it is suspenseful and chilly at the same time. there is a constant, written into the formula of the stories, that explores that fear of some unknown frightening variable. its like the writer understands that explaining exactly what it is makes it more easy to understand and might diminish the horror of it so instead we get the horror of it without ever really knowing exactly what "it" is. its really very clever. as for the comedy element of it? read the last few stories and you will find that same mesmerising style of writing but with a splash of humor and the bizarre. my new favorite having read these, though i still love the winged things, is the Scarlet Spider. the reason being it really hits the title message home; now you'll never know.i dont think i can praise this one enough, i had been waiting for something else from him and i got it and i loved it. now i want more.

Really liked the short stories. All of them are my favorite, l can't pick just one. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
Just when each story began to get interesting it was over. Not terrible for a younger individual just trying to pass time. I'd rather read something with a bit more substance.
