This was the beginning of something good! It's the story of three friends, each with their own troubles, heartaches, and hopes for the future. Reminiscent of the golden age of TV dramas, these women are facing a bit of everything- financial troubles, marriage troubles, single parenting, and man troubles. I enjoyed the ups and downs of this fast paced read and will certainly be picking up the rest of the series to see how this ends for these fabulous ladies!Product details

13 Steps to Distraction introduces three true friends, Justine, Kyra, and Dionne. It's short but very intriguing. This story is the prequel to J.L. Campbell's "Retribution" of which I gave read the first 3 chapters. I can't wait to finish the entire book. I wish I had read the the first two books before reading "Absolution". I would have been more in tune with the characters. I have better respect and a better appreciation of Justine and Xavier after reading "Distraction". Great writing J.L., I really enjoyed reading about this beautiful sisterhood bond.

Three friends - Dionne, Kyra, and Justine - are looking for ways just to survive and make life better for their kids. Yet no matter their drive, things don't always go the way they plan. Each woman has their own set of problems and must find new ways of making it through the day.
This isn't my usual type of read, but I found myself drawn in by these amazing characters. Typically in contemporary fiction, people's lives are sensationalized, but not here. The three friends have lives with real problems. Relationship and financial problems, work and children, and distractions on the side. It's emotional and intense. It's well written and left me wanting more!
This collection gives a peek into what led up to the novel Distraction. If you've already read Distraction, you'll enjoy this look at these characters. If you're considering one of J.L. Campbell's books, this is a good way to get a taste of her writing style.
I loved this look inside Kyra's head
"Kyra felt like a case a psychologist would refer to on a radio talk show; so often they discuss boys who suffered when their fathers abused their mothers, yet grew up to become wife beaters. In her way, she was like them - a woman who'd seen her mother survive terrible situations because of immature men, but couldn't seem to avoid serial relationships herself."
Kyra almost gets near to be raped by her deadbeat ex, in a scene that's both chilling and realistic.
We see not only what is happening to the three Jamaican women Justine, Dionne, and Kyra, but we get a peek inside the heads of the men with whom they are involved Milton, Xavier, Alex, and even Mr. Crusty Feet himself.
The only reason I'm not rating this a five is because I don't think it quite works as a stand-alone work or a collection of short stories, each with beginnings, middles, and ends, but I enjoyed it very much and highly recommend this author.
I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to getting the sequel. The story draws you in and makes you want to know what will happen next.

This is my first time reading JL Campbell's work, but it certainly won't be the last! This prequel was very well written and flowed so effortlessly, I could've easily read it in one sitting. I especially enjoyed the proverbs that began each chapter. I am looking forward to reading Distraction. This is a highly recommended read.

I sat down to read this bite-sized prequel and completed it in one sitting. I didn't put the story down until the end, one hour later.
This engaging story has a lovely flow and credible characters that I could totally identify with. Believe you me, I've met a Dionne, Kyra and Justine at some stage in my life, and I couldn't help but smile at some of the oh-so-familiar scenarios these women find themselves in, and chuckle in response to comments that they make.
I enjoyed this and I'm looking forward to reading Distraction!
