I read this book several years ago. I read at least a book a week. I'm also an author. This morning someone on Quora asked me what was the novel that influenced me the most? The first that came to mind was Lone Wolf. I came to this page to re-read the intro. I was quite surprised to see so many negative reviews. But I understand. Jodi Picoult is not afraid to write controversial material. This book stunned me... and will affect many people in different ways. That's our job as authors. But I must say that although Mystery/Suspense/Spies and bad guys are my favorite genre, this is the book that came to mind to answer my Quora question.
I'm leaving this review because I didn't leave one 5 years ago. If you have an open mind to the inexplicable vagaries of life, read this book.

I have always enjoyed Jodi Picoult books and feel that she does an amazing job of portraying "real life", however with Lone Wolf I feel she has failed. The characters are shallow and incomplete leaving the reader to not like them or even identify with them. A man leaves his wife and two small children to live with the wolves for two years but the family and world embraces him when he returns with little to no effects. The man has affairs and makes babies with college girls and there are little to no effects. A spoiled rotten extremely immature girl wants custody of her brain dead daddy, while gay brother fights his own self over dad's weaknesses. Good lands. All the while mom/ex wife is running after her new husband and their twins. No, this is definitely not Picoult's best and why she will be put on the shelf as the author I need to give a rest.
Let me just say that I LOVE Jodi Picoult. This was the first book of hers that I had to struggle to get through because it was so boring. The book is about a man (Luke Warren) whose life revolves around wolves and their packs. He and his 17 yr old daughter (Cara) are involved in a serious car accident that leaves him in a vegetative state. His only other child, Edward left home at age 18 six years ago and moved to Thailand after they had an argument. Cara wants to continue his life support and Edward thinks their father would prefer to die. A trial takes place to decide which child should be responsible for their dad's medical decisions. The characters of this book are detached and uninteresting. Added to that was the dread I felt every other chapter when it would be told from the father's perspective and every line was about living/interacting with wolves. Picoult's books are usually entertaining and contain a twist at the end. There was NOTHING about this book that was worth the money I spent on it. Read any of her other books over this one.
I read The Story teller because I had just been to Poland and visited the death camps. I liked it a lot. A friend told me that if I liked it I would LOVE Lone Wolf, so I bought it. I didn't care for it. Seemed to drag on without catching my interest. I even jumped ahead a chapter or two several times to see if it would pick up. Seems to just carry on without really going anywhere. Don't really care if the wolf parts are factual since they didn't catch my interest much either. I finally deleted it from my without finishing it. I read a lot of books and many are hard for me to put down. this one was hard for me to pick up. I think this writer has talent based on The Story Teller, but I don't see it here. I am open minded however and may try some more of her works. Wouldn't recommend this one.
I have not read straight fiction for awhile. I really wanted to love this book because a friend went to the trouble of finding big print and then gifting it to me. I know several people that wait for her books to come out. She is one of their favorite authors.
But I couldn't really get into the story. The family, estranged family, ex- family and new family were a bit too much. And with all there was either too much love, too much hate or too much indifference. I found that a strange way to build characters. They also didn't seem to develope much along the way. The names of who was speaking started each chapter...that helped except whoever, I guess the publisher, felt they had to change the font as well which did nothing but irritate me.
At the start of the book the wolf stories and how they live and form packs was interesting until I figured out that only the last paragraph or so of those chapters was relevant to the last or next chapter. I began skipping the wolf stuff.
The father with the massive head injuries really didn't get much sympathy from me...he left his family for a few years while they fell apart...why? Well, because he found wolves more interesting than them.
I just read the above...must say that I may be being too hard all the way around and I will try another of her books. So many cannot be wrong. Or, can they? -)
